About the event
Every year the IER runs our informative Employment Law Update event across the country, which brings together top solicitors, barristers, academics and trade unionists to discuss what has changed in the political, industrial and legal landscapes, and what implications these have for the area of labour law. This event aims to inform the labour movement of the legal pitfalls and possibilities. Previous examples of our past events with their blogs and delegate papers, can be found here.
With a Labour government now in power, important changes in employment-rights law are on the way. An Employment Rights Bill is promised for the autumn, along with repeal of the Strikes (Minimum Service Levels) Act 2023 – which effectively outlawed strike action in several sectors – and the Trade Union Act 2016, which added another layer of legal obstacles aimed at making lawful industrial action ever more difficult to take.
In this timely seminar IER chair Lord John Hendy KC will look in detail at the content of the Employment Rights Bill, and Professor Lydia Hayes will explore its implications for equality. Adrian Weir of the Campaign for Trade Union Freedom will give a frank appraisal and what more needs to be done to create a framework of labour law fit for the 21st Century and which satisfies Britain’s international treaty obligations.
Employment-law specialists Jo Seery of Thompsons and Paul Scholey of Morrish will provide a snapshot of key developments in employment law and landmark employment tribunal cases.
Labour has also promised to implement the Socio-Economic Duty enshrined in Section 1 of the Equality Act 2010 – but never yet enacted – which will oblige public bodies to discharge their functions in a way that reduces inequalities resulting from differences in occupation, education, place of residence or class.
Jo Wittams of the Equality Trust will address the potential offered by triggering the Socio-Economic Duty, and how it might be used as a tool to begin to reverse the widening of the poverty gap in British society.
Not to be missed by tradeunionists, campaigners, students and legal practitioners, with ample time for questions and discussion.
Please be aware that our employment-law updates historically sell out very quickly so book your seat in good time to avoid disappointment.
