About the book

ASLEF has a genuine commitment to the implementation or equal opportuntities in the railway industry. However, it is apparent that among train drivers in Britain, most of whom are ASLEF members, the vast majority are white, male and middle-aged.

In order to understand this lack of diversity in the sector, ASLEF has commissioned this independent report from the Institute of Employment Rights. The aims of the report are to consider the situation, review the data and trends, analyse the information and make recommendations regarding what steps ASLEF might take to increase diversity within the grade of train driver and in turn to increase the diversity of its membership.

In this report the author, Muriel Robison, an independent legal professional with an authoritative background in equality law, makes a series of recommendations on what the union, the employers and the regulatory bodies might do to ensure the industry remains on track with diversity.
