London police to strike on two-tier pay
6,500 Met police staff and 130 Mayor’s Office staff will strike next week in disputes over two-tier pay.
130 members at the London Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) will strike from 12 to 15 January over real-terms pay cuts. They were offered a 2% rise while the Mayor of London received 3.2%, with other policing organisations IOPC and NCA receiving 3.5% and 4.4% respectively.
6,500 civilian staff at Met Police will strike on 15 January. They are demanding the same fully consolidated £1,250 London allowance that their officer colleagues receive. Their previous day of strike action on 5 November was thought to have cost Met Police more in cover-staffing than it would have done to meet members’ demands.
Both groups of members will hold a rally on 15 January outside City Hall when Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley is expected to attend Sadiq Khan’s first Mayor’s Question Time.
PCS general secretary Fran Heathcote says:
In both these cases, the employer can afford to do the right thing and meet members’ demands.
These strikes will demonstrate yet again that these union members are as committed to justice in the workplace as they are to serving justice and the public through their jobs.
