Unite the Union take the initiative during Race Equality Week

From Unite campaigns:

Unite campaigns and recognises the responsibility in the union to challenge racism in the workplace. Organised workforces can be the key to addressing the pay gap in the workplace for our Black and Asian Ethnic Minority workers.

This #RaceEqualityWeek, we reaffirm that our union is strongest when workers of every heritage stand side by side, rooted in solidarity, respect, and shared purpose. Equality equality at work isn’t optional, it’s fundamental to justice, dignity, and collective strength in our movement.

Unite the union General Secretary Sharon Graham said:

Race Equality Week is a reminder that our movement is at its strongest when workers of every heritage come together with mutual respect and understanding. Equality is not a slogan; it is a collective commitment. When we all stand together with courage and conviction, we do more than challenge injustice: we ignite the full power of our union.

Negotiators 5-Step action plan

STEP 1 – Establish the position

Confirm with the employer whether a recent pay audit has been conducted and whether it covers all roles, grades, and employment types across the organisation.

STEP 2 – Analyse the findings

Use the audit data to identify whether:

  • BAEM workers are concentrated in specific roles or departments and/or paid less than comparable workers.
  • BAEM workers are over-represented in lower-graded roles or face barriers to progression.

STEP 3 – Raise the issue formally

Address any identified disparities directly with the employer, either:

  • Through collective pay negotiations, or
  • As a standalone negotiation issue requiring urgent action.

STEP 4 – Secure future protections

Ensure the employer puts in place robust fair and equal pay policies, alongside equal access to recruitment, progression, and promotion across all grades, to prevent future inequality.

STEP 5 – Monitor and challenge

Insist on regular pay audits, with outcomes reviewed and monitored jointly. Any future disparities must be challenged and addressed immediately with the employer.

When we stand together, we win together 💪
