UVW is looking for a practicing ​lawyer to join our fight against the bosses. This role is for someone who is looking to supplement an existing practice, ideally two days per week. The chosen candidate for this role may select to work on a self-employed contract, if preferred.

The role will involve:

  • Overseeing UVW’s strategic litigation.
  • Providing expert advice to a team of experienced legal caseworkers on knotty legal and strategic questions.
  • Acting directly in select complex and strategic litigation matters.

Essential criteria:

  • Practicing solicitor or barrister in employment law, or a related area.
  • Extensive advocacy experience.
  • Strong strategic litigation experience.
  • Commitment to workers’ rights, trade unionism and social justice.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in public law, immigration, discrimination, data protection and/or human rights law.
  • Working on legal matters regarding low paid, precious, migrant and otherwise marginalised workers.
  • Good level of Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Terms and Conditions: 

  • Pay: £13.50 an hour.
  • Benefits: UVW benefits include full pay sick pay and more than 6 weeks annual leave, or the chosen candidate may select to work on a self-employed contract.
  • Target days per week: 2, but open to negotiation

UVW is looking for two experienced legal caseworkers to join our fight against the bosses.

The roles will involve:

  • Running all stages of employment tribunal cases.
  • Drafting Particulars of Claim and submitting ET1s to the Employment Tribunal.
  • Advising members on the merits of their legal claims.
  • Identifying and launching important group and/or strategic litigation in the employment, equality and/or public law fields.
  • Drafting witness statements and conducting case management.
  • Representing workers in the employment tribunal at preliminary and final hearings.
  • Instructing and working closely with solicitors, barristers and other organisations.
  • Negotiating settlements.

Essential criteria:

  • Strong knowledge of employment law and the employment tribunal system.
  • Advocacy and drafting experience
  • Strong legal research skills.
  • Strong case management skills.
  • Commitment to workers’ rights, trade unionism and social justice.
  • Ability to learn and adapt quickly.
  • Ability to work independently and manage cases with limited supervision.

Desirable criteria:

  • Experience in employment law, or related areas such as public law, immigration, discrimination and/or human rights law.
  • Casework or legal experience relating to low paid, precious, migrant and otherwise marginalised workers.
  • Qualifying law degree (LLB/BA/GDL).
  • Experience making Freedom of Information Act requests and/or with Legal Aid applications.
  • Good level of Spanish and/or Portuguese.

Languages spoken:

English. Good level of Spanish and/or Portuguese is desirable but not mandatory (only one member of the Legal team currently speaks Spanish).

Terms and Conditions: 

£13.50 an hour plus all other UVW benefits include full pay sick pay and more than 6 weeks annual leave.
