Response to Consultation on Workplace Monitoring Technologies

The IER makes the case for meaningful collective voice over the use of use of monitoring & algorithmic management technologies at work.

This is the Response of the Institute of Employment Rights (IER) to the Government’s consultation, ‘Make Work Pay: Workplace Monitoring Technologies’ (WMT), running between 8 July and 30 September 2026.

The IER welcomes the opportunity to contribute to this consultation and believes that providing workers with meaningful collective voice over the use of monitoring and algorithmic management technologies is crucial for securing fundamental rights and decent conditions at work.

The authors, Dr Joe Atkinson and Michael Ford KC focus on three areas in the Consultation: (i) the principles for the responsible use of WMT which supports good industrial relations; (ii) the role and value of worker engagement; and, especially, (iii) the options for intervention.
