Academics David Whyte and Steve Tombs provide a detailed and critical response to the government’s Triennial Review of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in which a reduction in the body’s responsibilities or even its total abolition could be considered.
The authors analyse statistics and trends within HSE performance and health and safety in general, revealing that a lack of HSE funding, deregulation and a less vigorous approach to enforcement has led to a decline in workplace health and safety standards and the punishment of employers breaching regulations.
Whyte and Tombs strongly recommend that the HSE is strengthened with further resources earmarked for the body in order to support health and safety in the workplace.
