It’s official. UK workers need a pay rise. Thank you Mr Cameron for your belated words of wisdom!

But Cameron’s outburst is no more than the Bullingdon Boy’s equivalent of saying, ‘let them eat cake’. Cameron is so far removed from the people he allegedly represents that he cannot see the problems let alone the solutions.

But we at IER can. And we’ve been highlighting the problems and possible solutions for some time. Our Manifesto for Collective Bargaining provides the economic, industrial, social and moral reasons why trade unions must be at the heart of any economic recovery.

And now, with the kind assistance of the Barry Amiel and Norman Melburn Trust, we have put together this short You Tube clip. As a small contribution to a nationwide debate, Professor Keith Ewing and John Hendy QC explain how and why a future government must learn from our past, invite unions to the negotiating table and invest in the purchasing power of workers.
