Leading employment law researcher Professor Sonia McKay has authored a new Institute of Employment Rights briefing on the implications of Coalition proposals on employment agencies.

The vulnerability of agency workers – many of which are migrant workers – has been highlighted by the IER and other organisations time and again. Indeed, Professor McKay authored our publication Agency and migrant workers in recent years.

The academic, who is Professor of European Socio-Legal Studies at London Metropolitan University’s Working Lives Research Institute notes that deregulation is not passionately supported even by the micro and small businesses and individuals that made up the majority of consultation respondents on this issue. Furthermore, the final proposals published by the government all either maintain the current law or are so vague as to say nothing much at all at the present time.

The one thing we do know is that vulnerable workers are about to become more vulnerable, as the government is clear that it will reduce the enforcement of employment agency regulations to a small team focusing on the National Minimum Wage. This essentially gives the sector a free pass to bend the rules.
