President of the IER Professor Keith Ewing and IER Chair John Hendy QC will be leading the debate on collective bargaining at next weekend’s Class National Conference.

The legal experts, who are the authors of the IER’s latest publication Reconstruction after the Crisis: A Manifesto for Collective Bargaining, will speak at morning session Roots of Equality: Collective Bargaining, Trade Union Freedoms and a more equal society from 11:30 to 12:45 on Saturday 02 November 2013.

Joining them on the stage will be Rachel Harrison of the GMB, Ian Lavery MP and TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady. The debate will be chaired by Head of trade union law firm Thompsons Solicitors Stephen Cavalier.

“Neo-liberalism has failed. Workers are now faced with low pay and poorer working conditions as the result of a series of anti-union laws. This cannot continue. We need a government that will redefine market structures by bringing together both unions and employers. In short – we need a return to collective bargaining,” said think tank Class, which is hosting the event.

The IER has marked itself out as the go-to think tank for collective bargaining expertise and advice following the launch of Reconstruction after the Crisis at this year’s TUC Congress. The book includes proposals for the next government into how widespread collective bargaining can be encouraged across the UK, leading to and increase in pay, fairer conditions, and a stronger and more resilient economy.

Ewing and Hendy’s session comes as part of a star-studded event, with speakers including Chavs author Owen Jones; senior Labour MPs including Angela Eagle and Diane Abbott; journalists including Guardian columnists Seaumus Milne, Polly Toynbee and Zoe Williams, and Mirror Editor Kevin Maguire.

Chair of Class Steve Hart said: “This conference will provide a platform to fast track vibrant, fresh ideas into policy and looks set to be one of the biggest gatherings of progressives in the run-up to the 2015 General Election.

“The event will see campaigners, journalists and leading thinkers on the economy, politics and society gather with working people and their unions to discuss the challenges facing Britain – and the responses needed to inspire voters.”
