About the event

What is the role of trade unions at work and in society? How can they best defend the pay, pensions and jobs of their members? Two trade union general secretaries will meet to discuss their thoughts on trade unions in a time of austerity.

Some union leaders speak of civil disobedience. Others have raised the prospect of prison for breaking anti-trade union laws. Many have participated in coordinated strike action in defence of pensions. What is on the mind and in the game-plan of Mark Serwotka and Christine Blower?

This event is the third in a series of annual collaborations between the Institute of Employment Rights and The Haldane Society of Socialist Lawyers. Chaired by John Hendy, the event is designed to stimulate thought and debate
